Julia Jenner is a storyteller who weaves her stories through her art, her graphic design and her teaching. For more than 20 years she has been telling stories for the commercial market, first through photography then through writing, editing and graphic design. Most recently she added fabric as a media.
For Julia, working with fabric is like digging in the dirt. It is elemental. It makes her feel whole. She loves fiber arts of all kinds and has dabbled in various aspects of fiber from felting, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, dressmaking and quilting. Quilting is her current media. She especially likes the practicality of quilting, it was one of the things that drew her to graphic design. The other aspect that draws her to quilting is that traditionally it was considered 'women's work'. There is a connection that she finds in working with fabric with the past, particularly women of the past. When looking at quilts, both historical and modern, Julia is always looking for the story. What does the quilt say? What was the designer trying to say? What can be discerned from the colors used, the type of fabric, the patterns used, or the words printed or embroidered on the fabric. The quilts Julia has been creating most recently tell stories. In addition, she has begun to use fabric to illustrate stories and to create images made entirely of fabric and thread, like the self portrait to the left.
